New Adult Stem Cell Public Seminar

The Manhattan Regenerative Medicine Medical Group Announces an Adult Stem Cell Public Seminar in Rumson/Red Bank, New Jersey.

The Manhattan Regenerative Medicine Medical Group announces a free public seminar on the use of adult stem cells for various degenerative and inflammatory conditions. The seminar will be provided by Dr. Thomas A. Gionis, Surgeon-in-Chief and Dr. Nia Smyrniotis, Medical Director.

The Manhattan Regenerative Medicine Medical Group (Manhattan, New York), along with sister affiliates, the Miami Stem Cell Treatment Center (Miami; Boca Raton; Orlando; The Villages; Sarasota, Florida) and, the Irvine Stem Cell Treatment Center (Irvine; Westlake Village; Sacramento, California), abide by approved investigational protocols using adult adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) which can be deployed to improve patients’ quality of life for a number of chronic, degenerative and inflammatory conditions and diseases. ADSCs are taken from the patient’s own adipose (fat) tissue (found within a cellular mixture called stromal vascular fraction (SVF)). ADSCs are exceptionally abundant in adipose tissue. The adipose tissue is obtained from the patient during a 15 minute mini-liposuction performed under local anesthesia in the doctor’s office. SVF is a protein-rich solution containing mononuclear cell lines (predominantly adult autologous mesenchymal stem cells), macrophage cells, endothelial cells, red blood cells, and important Growth Factors that facilitate the stem cell process and promote their activity.

ADSCs are the body’s natural healing cells – they are recruited by chemical signals emitted by damaged tissues to repair and regenerate the body’s injured cells. The Manhattan Regenerative Medicine Medical Group only uses Adult Autologous Stem Cells from a person’s own fat – No embryonic stem cells are used; and No bone marrow stem cells are used. How do Stem Cells Heal?Adult Autologous Adipose-derived Stem Cells (ADSC’s) are known as “progenitor” cells. This means they remain dormant (do nothing) until they are signaled by tissue damage. That’s when they get to work. They hone in on areas of injury or degeneration and turn on the healing process. They may simply change into the cell type the damaged area needs for repair, and they also appear to reduce inflammation and signal growth factors and other mechanisms of tissue regeneration. Suffice it to say that there are multiple animal models and a plethora of human evidence indicating significant reparative effects of adult stem cells.

What is a Stem Cell?

A stem cell is basically any cell that can undergo two functions; replication (making copies of itself) and differentiation (being able to change or transform into another type of tissue). This means the cell can not only multiply, but it can also turn into various tissue types. There are several kinds of stem cells.

Most people are most familiar with embryonic stem cells – they come from human babies or fetuses. We do NOT use embryonic stem cells at the Miami Stem Cell Treatment Center. These cells from the embryonic stage of development are “pluripotent” because they have yet to differentiate and can change into any body part. Because they are taken from unborn or unwanted embryos, there has been considerable moral and ethical controversy surrounding their use. Furthermore, while they have shown promise in some areas of medicine, they have also been associated with occasional tumor (teratoma) formation. Work is being conducted by several companies, most of them outside the United States, to isolate particular lines of embryonic stem cells for future use. At the Miami Stem Cell Treatment Center we only use Adult Autologous Adipose-derived Stem Cells (ADSC’s) – we do not use embryonic stem cells.

Another kind of stem cells are adult stem cells, which reside in different tissues in the body. In recent years, much work has been done on bone marrow-derived stem cells. Also known as “mesenchymal stem cells” because they come from the mesodermal areas of the body, they can differentiate into mesodermal cell types such as bone, cartilage, fat, connective tissue, blood vessels, muscles, and nerves. However, because bone marrow stem cells are low in numbers, they  usually require being cultured after extraction in order to multiply their numbers for therapeutic use. At the Miami Stem Cell Treatment Center we only use Adult Autologous Adipose-derived Stem Cells (ADSC’s) – we do not use bone marrow stem cells.

As it turns out, fat is also loaded with mesenchymal stem cells. In fact, it has hundreds if not thousands of times more stem cells than bone marrow–and they are easier to extract. Because most people have adequate fat supplies and the numbers of stem cells are so great–plus we have tools that allow us to separate the stem cells from fat–there is no need to culture the cells over a period of days, so they can be used immediately.
